Wedding Guest Book Ideas

Here’s a neat idea for the guest book at your Peoria wedding . Let your guests take pictures of themselves instead of signing a traditional guest book! Simply provide a Polaroid camera and assign someone the job of taking pictures of the guests as they arrive at the reception. Once the picture is dry, provide a Sharpie and they can sign the picture, make a note to the bride and groom or hand draw a silly picture. It can be whatever the guest wants it to be. This is a unique, and personal, way for guests to “sign in” at the wedding.

Whoever handles the taking of the pictures should also handle putting them in an album of some sort. A scrap booker might provide a special memory book with the Polaroid pictures in it, or the pictures can simply be placed in a nice album and presented later to the bride and groom.

Many guests don’t give a great deal of thought to the guest book. They whiz by the guest book table more concerned with getting their cocktail and hitting the dance floor. If this is a concern, provide a “traveling” guest book. Send each guest something either to sign or decorate before the Peoria wedding .

Evaluation of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs using ANSI/RESNA standards

March 29th, 2009

Evaluation of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs using ANSI/RESNA standards

OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare performance of pushrim-activated power-assisted wheelchairs (PAPAW) (iGLIDE, e-motion, Xtender) on national standards. DESIGN: Engineering performance and safety evaluation. SETTING: A Veteran Affairs and university-based research center. SPECIMENS: Nine PAPAWs. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Static, dynamic stability, brake effectiveness, maximum speed, acceleration, retardation, energy consumption, static, impact, and fatigue strength. RESULTS: There was no significant difference among the 3 models in forward stability. The iGLIDE was the most stable, whereas the e-motion was the least stable model in the rearward stability tests. All PAPAWs performed equally on the slopes of 3 degrees and 6 degrees in the forward and rearward directions. Braking distance was the highest for e-motion (5.64+/-0.28m) and the lowest (1.13+/-0.03m) for the iGLIDE in forward direction. The average equivalent cycles of all PAPAWs were 318,292+/-112,776.6 cycles (n=8) on the fatigue tests. All PAPAWs passed the impact and static strength tests. CONCLUSIONS: The standards of the American National Standards Institute and handicap scooters, power wheelchairs the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America could act as quality assurance tool for wheelchairs. The standards for wheelchairs were first approved in 1990; after 17 years, exceeding the minimum values in the standards would be a reasonable expectation

Vitamins and Minerals That Fight Eye Disease

March 28th, 2009

Vitamins and Minerals That Fight Eye Disease

Zinc-The mineral element zinc is found in very quantities in the eye. It may be used for a metabolic process in the retina. The research does suggest that zinc deficiencies contribute to retinal breakdown and that zinc supplementation can slow macular degeneration. The recommended dosage is approximately 80 milligrams of zinc oxide daily. Copper-This should be part of the supplementation process to offset the copper deficiencies that increased zinc intake can produce. The recommended macular degeneration treatments dosage is 2 milligrams daily of cupric oxide. Beta Carotene-Beta carotene is a vitamin A precursor. It serves as another means of slowing the oxidation process in the eye. Studies suggest that those who take in beta carotene in their diet regularly are less prone to macular degeneration. The recommended daily dose is 15 milligrams of beta carotene. Beta carotene may not be appropriate in these doses for smokers or former smokers as there has been a link between beta carotene and lung cancer.

History of Glucose cholestechs

Anton Hubert Clemens received the first patent for a blood glucose cholestech called the Ames Reflectance cholestech on September 14, 1971. Richard K. Handicap needs awareness

March 22nd, 2009

Handicap needs awareness

I would like to raise people’s awareness of handicap scooters needs around the Laboratory workplace. People on crutches, scooters and wheelchairs have some different needs than the ambulatory. I am the first to admit that when I was ambulatory I was unaware of the environment around me in these terms. However, now that I am in a wheelchair, I would like to share with my co-workers some needs and easy-to-do things for people around the Lab.
Doors are a big issue. People in power wheelchairs, scooters etc., need to place themselves to the side of the door to open it. Objects such as trash cans, tables and chairs placed next to the door result in a situation where a disabled person cannot open the door. Please make sure that a 3-foot-wide space is available between the side of the door that opens and any object placed along the wall.
Another issue is bathrooms. If there are multiple stalls available please do not choose the wheelchair accessible stall if you do not need it. It is frustrating and potentially unpleasant to have to wait for the bathroom stall because it is occupied when three other stalls are available.
Wheelchairs, scooters and crutches require more maneuvering room than just the typical human body. Objects piled in hallways can create impassible situations. Imagine not being able to go to a meeting or your office because the hallway was blocked and there was no way around.
Even though it seems like sitting in a wheelchair or scooter requires no effort, disabled people are often plagued by fatigue. And, little tasks such as opening doors can require a great deal of effort. Think about how we would feel to go about the day with a bungee cord around our legs and arms.
I want to thank people for spending an extra second to make life more normal for people who are disabled.

A Brief History of Peoria, Illinois

Peoria, whose name is derived from a Native American word meaning the land of fat beast, is located on the land originally inhabited by the Pe-orias, one of the five tribes that comprised the Illini confederacy. The modern city was originally explored by Father Jacques Marquette (for whom the Hotel Pere Marquette was named for) in 1673. In 1680, Rober Cavalier Sieur de LaSalle and Henri de Tonti constructed Fort Crevecoeur on the east bank of the Illinois River near modern dayEast Peoria.

In 1691, Tonti & Francois Daupin de LaForest built Fort St. Louis II (also known as Fort Pimeteoui) which is believed to have been located at the foot of Mary & Adams Street. This was the first Eurpoean settlement in Illinois to include a trading post, a blacksmith shop, a chapel, a winepress and a windmill.

Familial ARMD

This is especially true in individuals who may have a family history of age macular degeneration or be a contributing factor when in combination with genetic mutations. These few causes however are preventable since they deal with factors that can be controlled through lifestyle changes. The causes of Macular degeneration are numerous. It can be caused by diet or health concerns, genetic mutations, as well as age. While it can affect individuals, who do not have a family history of this type of visual impairment it is more likely to appear in families that have a history of this type of visual impairment. This means it is important to check your family history to make sure that you are not at risk or to educate yourself so you can be aware of the causes and the symptoms that you could experience with Macular degeneration.

Microalbumin

Microalbumin

Microalbumin

One common cholestech extremely serious result of diabetes is kidney failure. Under normal conditions, the kidneys filter toxins from the blood. When the kidney’s filtering processes begin to become impaired, protein (microalbumin) begins to spill into the urine. Testing urine for small, yet abnormal amounts of albumin (microabluminuria) is a common way to detect this condition early, before it can damage your kidneys.

Many urine dipsticks are used to test for large amounts of albumin. To measure a small amount of albumin, which may show an early stage of kidney disease, your health care provider may use specific tests for low levels of albumin (microalbumin tests). To do this test, you may have to collect your urine for several 24-hour periods.

The ADA recommends that adults with diabetes be tested for microalbumin every 3- to 6-months. The ADA recommends testing in children with type 1 diabetes at puberty or after having diabetes for 5 years.

Early detection of microalbumin is important because it indicates increased risk for both renal cholestech vascular disease. Fortunately, early detection allows for treatments that may delay the beginning of a more serious disease.

Comparison of blood lactate elimination in individuals with paraplegia and able-bodied individuals during active recovery from exhaustive exercise

March 16th, 2009

Comparison of blood lactate elimination in individuals with paraplegia and able-bodied individuals during active recovery from exhaustive exercise

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare blood lactate elimination between individuals with paraplegia (P) and able-bodied (AB) individuals after strenuous arm exercise. METHODS: Eight P and 8 AB men (matched for age, height, and weight) participated in this study. Average weekly arm-training volume for P participants (eg, handicap scooters, medicare power wheelchairs basketball) and AB participants (eg, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing) was 4.1 +/- 1.6 vs 2.8 +/- 0.8 h. A maximal-arm-cranking intensity-graded exercise test to volitional exhaustion was performed by all test participants. Immediately after the exercise test, the participants performed arm cranking for another 30 minutes at a workload of one third of the maximally achieved power output. During this active recovery, mixed-capillary blood samples were taken for lactate analysis. RESULTS: The lactate accumulation constant was significantly higher for P individuals, whereas the lactate elimination constant showed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with paraplegia seem to have no disadvantages in lactate elimination after exhaustive arm exercise compared with able-bodied individuals

Theatre Under the Big Top

March 16th, 2009

Theatre Under the Big Top

Corn Stock Theatre, founded in 1954, has brought excitement and imagination to Peoria audiences for over fifty years. This theatre, given its name by Helen Louise Young at the first Corn Stock meeting, was the first outdoor theatre-in-the-round that Central Illinois had ever experienced. Because of the ideas and hopes of many people, Corn Stock blossomed into the experimental environment that keeps people coming back for more.

It all began in the spring of 1954 at a party where Gretchen Iben and Dick Chandler brought up the idea of searching for a place to put on a summer play. This idea grew as a group of people met on March 7, 1954 in the old CILCO Hall to discuss plans for the new theatre. At this meeting, a board was organized with Corn Stock’s co-founder, Gretchen Iben, elected as chairman and its founder, Dick Chandler, as assistant chairman. Corn Stock Theatre inPeoria began its first season with only 35 dollars in the budget.
